Karin Mathews Counselling and Psychotherapy in Holborn, City of London

Frequently Asked Questions

How can counselling help me?
Generally counselling is regarded as a talking cure. The overall aim of counselling or psychotherapy is to provide an opportunity for you, the client, to work towards living in a more satisfying and resourceful way.
The aim of the particular psychotherapeutic relationships will vary according to individual needs. Counselling may be concerned with addressing and resolving specific problems, or it could be about making decisions, coping with crisis, developing personal insight, awareness and knowledge, working through feelings of inner conflict and improving relationships with others.

How do I know if my counsellor is fully qualified?
Most counsellors are members of a professional body, and obtaining membership often entails providing evidence of professional qualifications. These professional bodies have websites containing names of members and details of Ethical Codes of Practice and Complaints Procedures.
I am an Individual Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherpay (BACP).

What does Confidentiality Mean?
Confidentiality provides the client with an opportunity to talk honestly outside of their network and this is considered to be a helpful factor in the process of counselling. On the whole the counsellor is bound by Professional Codes of Ethical Practice to ensure that confidentiality is maintained and client identity is never revealed. There are certain ethical and legal exceptions.

How Long Does A Session Last
Sessions are usually weekly and last for 50 minutes. By mutual agreement, we will arrange a day and a time which then becomes your "personal space". This will only be changed by further mutual agreement. I can offer you the commitment to be available for you at the agreed time.

How long would I come to see you for?
I work with some clients for a few sessions only and with others for a much longer period. I would see you for an initial session on a mutual assessment basis. I am happy to work with you for years if that suits you.

What days and times do you have available?
Please see my appointments and fees page.

How does counselling come to an end?
Clients are usually ready to end when they feel they have achieved some of the goals which have formed the focus of counselling. An ending is always discussed and planned together to help closure. This might involve "spacing out" sessions to fortnightly meetings, to enable gradual adjustment to take place. A counsellor is always concerned to meet the individual needs of the client when planning an end to counselling, but that is up to you and the ending of the counselling relationship is ultimately in your hands.

What kind of counselling do you offer?
I can work in brief therapy and long-term therapy. My orientation is psychodynamic, if that means anything to you.

Counselling is a Commitment
Counselling is a commitment to yourself and it is important to consider whether you are ready to invest in yourself and if you are prepared to commit to the time, cost and energy. This is something we can explore a little in the initial session.
